The folk dance ensemble of Likio Ellinidon of Thessaloniki was established in 1939 in Thessaloniki. Thessaloniki is the second biggest city of Greece and it is the largest city of Greek Macedonia region.

It is an association with large and one of the oldest in Greece. Its purpose is to preserve Greek traditions and customs in the context of our national life, to elevate Greek woman and provide moral support to mother and child. In the difficult years of the War II the Nurses ‘ school that it founded offered a notable service.


To realize its objectives the Likion Hellinidon of Thessaloniki runs the following departments: Folklore, literature, wardorobe, library, celebrations and receptions, Press, Community Service, Traditional Instruments, National Traditions and Dances (children, teenagers, adults).


It has a valuable collection of 800 costumes from all parts of Greece, and attempts to preserve all that is traditional and genuine Greek.


On 30 December of 1991,  at a special ceremony, the Likion Ellinidon of Thessaloniki received an award from Athens Academy, for its activity over a period of more than 50 years as “For FIFTY YEARS AND MORE , IT HAS PRESERVED THE HISTORICAL MEMORY OF THE GREEKS ALIVE”


The adults folk ensemble dances Dances from all over Greece (Thraki, Greek Macedonia, Pontus, Minor Asia, Islands etc) and of course the famous Greek syrtaki. The colourful costumes true copies of the authentic impress the audience while the live music (of violin, accordion, clarinet etc) keep the rhythm.

The ensemble of all these years has participated in many folk festivals in all over the world (all European countries, U.S.A, Japan, Australia etc).

It has also given concerts in many important concerts halls in Greece like Megaron of Music and concert hall of the University.

It has taken part in the celebration for the events for Thessaloniki cultural capital of Europe.
